Different people going through the same experiences in life will each learn different lessons.
For instance, my dad was grown when the stock market crashed in 1929 and he made it through the dust bowl years as a farmer. I guess the main lesson he learned from all this can be summed up in one word: frugality. He always taught me to be saving with my money, not to go into debt for anything that wasn't an absolute necessity and to do without until you could afford to pay cash for what you wanted. I know of others just a little younger than myself whose parents were in their teens or pre-teens during the depression who had to go to work after school and in the summer, or maybe miss some school altogether, in order to help their parents get by. After these young people reached adulthood, got a good job and had families of their own, I have overheard many of them make the statement: "My child is not going to have to work like I did when I was growing up. Whatever he wants, he is going to get, he's not going to have to do without like I did." Where did he think that he learned the work ethic to be able to hold a job?
He learned it from that work in his youth. I'm not advocating that young people should have to go to work to help the family, but I do think that they should have responsibilities around home and be given regular chores to do to earn an allowance, thus teaching them that they do not get their money gratis. Dad always taught me that hard work, and learning to do without, will temper a person. To understand what this means consider a steel plowshare. One that has not been tempered is brittle and will break easily whenever it encounters a rock or root in the ground. However, a piece of well tempered steel is strong and hard and will be able to push the rock aside or to cut right through the root. The same thing holds true for a person. A person who has been tempered to hard work in his youth and taught what it is like to have to do without some things will be better prepared to meet the challenges of adulthood than someone who has never had to work and has been given everything he wanted. The youth need to be taught responsibility and be held accountable for their actions. This cannot be done at school, it has to
The scene is typical. Two people in different areas of the country each start a business. They both have the same qualifications, the same training and each one selects an optimum location.
Within a year one of them is raking in the money hand over fist and the other one has filed for bankruptcy. What happened here? What went so wrong that two people with the same qualifications and an even start could wind up in such different circumstances? It can usually be summed up in one word : Personality! So, what is personality and can it be defined? Personally, I think there are three traits of character that define a persons personality. They are:
#1. How a person percieves himself. This can also be listed as ego. Are you all wrapped up in yourself to the point of ignoring others, or do you put the wellfare of others first?
#2. Your outlook on life in general. Are you always complaining because nothing is going your way, or do you see a setback as a challenge and say, "Here is a chance for me to make improvements!"
#3. How you percieve others. Do you see other people around you as someone you can use to get what you want, or do you see them as fellow travelers, who, while working together, can accomplish more than each individual working seperately?
The following list, "The 7 Top Daily Acknowledgements," if practiced daily could change your outlook on life and also the way others see you.
Top 7 Daily Acknowledgements
#1. Acknowledge your maker. Be thankful that you have been given another day to pursue your dreams and the health and energy to do so.
#2. Acknowledge your spouse with a hug, a kiss and a "I love you." The one whom you have promised to love, honor and protect. The one who has been supportive of you in all your endeavers.
#3. Acknowledge your children with a word of encouragement that they may grow up to become strong individuals. They are the ones you have brought forth to carry on after you have completed your race.
#4. Acknowledge your neighbor with a friendly greeting and a kind word. As neighbors, we are here to watch over and protect each other that no harm may come to neither.
#5. Acknowledge your employees/co-workers with a friendly greeting and words of support. They are the ones that keep your business running smoothly.
#6. Acknowledge your suppliers with a thank you for promptness when paying your bill. Without their prompt delivery of supplies your employees could not keep your business running smoothly.
#7. And last, but certainly not least, acknowledge your customers with a friendly greeting and a big "Thank you." They are the ones that pay your bills and without them you would not need the employees or suppliers.
What does success mean to you? Some people equate success with amassing hugh sums of money while others measure success by achieving simple goals they have set for their lives. So, what goals have you set for your life? Have you achieved those goals, and if not, do you have a time frame set up in which time you intend to reach those goals? Those goals do not have to be anything drastic. Setting simple, achievable goals is similiar to building a stairway to your ultimate lifes goal.. Each time you reach a new goal, you reach a new plateau on your way to fulfilling your lifes dream, and each new goal you reach gives you an incentive to set new goals. Let me give an example of what I mean in achieving your small goals in life. A few years after I got out of school a buddy of mine, whom I had gone to school with, came to work at nights at the store where I was working. He was moonlighting from his main job. One night we were taking a break together and the conversation got around to cars. "Do you remember the old song 'Hot Rod Lincoln' that they played so much at the roller rink when we were freshmen?" he asked. "Sure," I replied. "I think they wore out two or three of those records that year." "Well, after hearing that song so much I made up my mind that I was going to be driving a lincoln myself someday, and last year I finally got my lincoln." It didn't matter to him that the car was five years old. He had finally gotten his dream car. So reach out and see how many of those little dreams you can fulfill. Maybe it's getting that dream car you've always wanted, as my buddy did, or maybe taking that dream vacation to the Bahamas. Whatever it is, go ahead and do it, and then dream some bigger dreams and see how long it takes to fulfill them.

Establishing maximum value for your price is never easy. In today's volatile economy, it's even more of a challenge. For most companies, costs are increasing, yet the ability to pass them along to the customer is fraught with numerous roadblocks. The customer's response to a price increase is rarely positive, with the usual line of objections that go along with it. In addition, there are the concerns that a competitor's price may undercut yours or that the customer may choose to go down a different path instead of buying from you at all. As big as these issues are, they pale in comparison to the number one roadblock to maximizing your price point: the confidence of the salesperson. The main reason why companies do not capitalize on their potential revenue is because their salespeople do not have the confidence to ask for and receive the highest price point. If a salesperson is secure in what they are selling and in knowing how the customer will benefit from their products/services, then they will be confident in asking for and getting the desired price point. The problem is that many times the salesperson lacks confidence in at least one of these areas, resulting in their inability to make their sales quota. To rectify this problem, it's important to examine how the salesperson first developed a lack of confidence in their ability to maximize their price points. Generally, it stems from a sale they perceived to be lost because their price had been too high. On the surface, their assumption probably appeared to be correct. However, in reality, it just seemed that way because the right price-value relationship had not been established. If the salesperson had executed a proper sales strategy that allowed both himself and the customer to see the product's/service's true value, this could have been avoided. It needs to be communicated that in a B to B environment, the benefits are to both the buyer and the business they're buying it for. In a B to C environment, the benefits are to both the buyer and to the person(s) who will actually use the product or service. When the salesperson and the customer understand this, it can help erase the uncertainty that the price may pose.Let me give you two quick examples. If a person works for a mega-global company and is buying widgets, he'd have no problem spending a little on them if he knew he was buying them from a reputable company that has experience selling to other mega-global companies. In essence, the customer is looking for confidence and is willing to pay for it. In a B to C situation, because the customer doesn't want to look like a fool for their purchase, they want the salesperson to provide them with enough emotional benefit to allow them to convey to others that they made a great decision. In both situations, an inexperienced salesperson is going to lose the sale if they don't take the time to use questions that encourage the customer to fully express their needs. In general, new salespeople often lose the sale shortly after they've stated their price. Thus, it's only natural for them to believe that the price was the determining factor. However, when digging below the surface, the price was not what prevented them from closing the deal. Rather, they lost the sale because they didn't ask enough questions to fully establish the needs of the customer.Top-performing salespeople ask questions that allow the customer to elaborate on their needs and then demonstrate their listening skills by asking appropriate open questions and probing deeper with great follow-up questions. They use the information that they learn to better explain how their product or service can be beneficial to the customer. In my 25 plus years of selling, I've learned that the customer's real needs, hurts, and wants don't often surface until you're demonstrated genuine interest in what their thoughts and goals are. Ironically, this means that you can throw out their initial comments, as it is rarely the need they are looking to fill. If you expect to base your price-value relationship on what you first hear, you'll never come close to achieving your maximum price point. In summary, today's economy is full of opportunities for top performing salespeople to ask really good questions that get customers talking. This allows both the customer and the salesperson to see, feel, and understand what their true needs are. When the salesperson can experience this across multiple customers, they will begin to develop the assurance they need to be able to confidently convey the maximum price point their company expects them to receive. Time is one of the most precious gift we have been given. God has given us time to learn, love, work, have fun, and even to get healthier and wiser. As you grow into a more complete individual, you realize how precious time is, and how important it is to use it to your advantage. Whether it is time to go to school and get the most out of it, to start a family, to give more to your existing family, or even to start a business, learning how to organize and manage your time is the best way to reach your goals and become more successful.
Follow these simple tips to help you manage time and lead a more productive day:
Tip #1: Determine your priorities: Find out what is most important to you by giving everything in your life--from family, friends, and partners to work, play, studies--a level of priority. Divide a piece of paper in 4 sections each with a number from 1 to 4, 1 being the most important part of your life and 4 being the lowest priority. Then allocate each aspect of your life into the appropriate box. You will now have a clear idea of what things in your life should be considered big priorities, lower priorities, etc.
Tip #2: Make a list of your life-long dreams and start working towards them: Include any and every unfulfilled dream you ever had. Be creative and a little crazy. The paper can hold anything, so even if you dont think it is possible in a million years, put it down. Write down a list of 100 or 1,000 goals and dreams that you want to achieve. Every year, at the start of the year, you can review this list, cross out whatever has been done and add new things. Then (and always with your priorities in mind) start working and moving towards achieving one or more of these dreams and goals.
Tip #3: Be Proactive / Plan Ahead: Write down on a piece of paper all of the things you must get done, need to get done, and want to get done on a daily basis. Organize your day the night before. That way, you will not waste time organizing and planning for the day that already started. The To Do List will also give you a chance to determine if you have enough time to do it all in one day or if you need to ask for help from others. It will also help you see how much time you need to accomplish every goal.
Tip #4: Stay organized: One of the key elements of managing your time is staying organized. If it took you half a day to clean your closets, office area, or apartment, it may very well be because that area was messy and unorganized. Understand that spending a few extra minutes each day putting things where they should go will save you hours later on. There is no excuse for being disorganized. It takes hardly any time to keep everything in order, and it prevents the stress and anxiety associated with living in a messy, cluttered area. Cleanliness also prevents the procrastination that comes from not wanting to deal with such a mess.
Tip #5: Stay focused: Keep in mind (or on a piece of paper hung on the wall) what you already have determined is important to you. Make your actions align with these thoughts, and continue to focus on the end goal.
Tip #6: Be grateful: Thank yourself and the divine every night before going to bed for all the big rocks and pebbles that you were able to fit in your jar. If you could not fit all the rocks, pebbles, and sand into your jar today, acknowledge it as a lesson learned and look at the new day ahead as a new 24-hour long opportunity to do more. You did a great job today, and tomorrow will be even better.Tip #7: Ask for Help: We cannot do everything alone. As a matter of fact, we never do because we are never alone. Do not be afraid to ask for help for there are lessons to be learned from those who help us. When you create partnerships, delegate and negotiate if you are asking for or giving assistance. Allowing others to do what they must do will take away unnecessary things on your to do list.

LONDON: The authorities in the United Kingdom have advised parents to watch popular steamy TV soaps as an ice-breaker to conversations with their teenage children about sex and relationships. Urging parents to make sex and relationships a part of everyday discussion, a report commissioned by the British department for children, schools and families, warned that breakdown of conversation in the home had contributed to surge in teenage pregnancy rates because it left youngsters vulnerable to influences from peers and the media. "Parents should feed off the everyday and broach conversations about sex and sexual education as part of wider discussions. This provides a springboard for parents to communicate their values as well as helping teens challenge their own beliefs," the Daily Mail quoted the report, by teen agony aunt Anita Naik, as saying. It said they should look for possible discussion topics on TV, such as Ian Beale on 'EastEnders' confronting his daughter about her boyfriend, only for her uncle to find her planning to have sex. Pregnant Hollyoaks character Amy Barnes, 15, could help parents discuss the realities of having a baby at a young age. The report said parents feel happier discussing the threat of drugs and gang culture than initiating discussions about contraception and sexually-transmitted diseases. It pointed out that a majority 55% of parents held back conversation about sex and relationships b cause of embarrassment. According to the report, children were most receptive between the ages of 11 and 14, after which it may be too late to start. Even as attitudes to sex have changed "dramatically", the growing influence of technology on children had created a generation gap, the report said. It advised parents to read teenagers' magazines to reduce the gap so that they could easily start conversations with their children about the facts of life. But Norman Wells, of the Family Education Trust, said: 'Parents need to control children's exposure to sexual material in magazines and on television, not encourage it. 'Parents will do far more by being good role models than going out of their way to initiate conversations about sexual intimacy that children don't need to know about.
LONDON: Britain's governing Labour Party suffered its severest electoral setback under the 13-month stewardship of PM Gordon Brown, late on Thursday with the loss of one of its safest seats, Glasgow East in Scotland. Labour's byelection defeat in the region the Scottish-born-and-bred Brown calls home, is seen as proof positive it will find it almost impossible to win a fourth consecutive general election, leaving the way open for the main opposition Conservative Party to form a government mid-2010, after more than a decade out of power. Glasgow East, the constituency Labour lost by a massive 22% swing to the Scottish Nationalist Party, has been one of Labour's rock-solid industrial bases for more than 70 years. Pundits said it was a sign of rejection of Brown and the Labour Party from the mainly poor, Catholic constituency, parts of which have a lower life expectancy than Gambia. Glasgow East, which is famously rough and has a more than 50% unemployment rate, is said to have delivered its euphemistic ‘Glasgow Kiss' to Brown, the term used to describe a massive headbutt. Analysts say that if the same swing were replicated at a general election, even Brown would not be safe in his Scottish parliamentary constituency, ensuring that Labour is totally routed up and down the UK. The newest byelection defeat is Labour's third electoral humiliation under Brown in just nine weeks. It is seen as a significant sign Britain is ready for political change at the very top. But Brown insisted he was confident he could persuade the British electorate to keep faith with Labour. On Friday afternoon, Brown bullishly urged party activists to "have confidence" in policies that he said would "persuade" voters to back the party at the next general election. He told Labour members from 55 constituency associations and 30 trade unions that there was a "brighter future" for Labour, despite its Glasgow East byelection defeat. Even so, senior Labour ministers and party apparatchiks admitted the byelection result represented a catastrophe for the party. Conservative leader David Cameron, who has taken his party to a solid 20-point lead in opinion polls vis-à-vis Labour, urged Brown to call a general election as soon as possible. Cameron said UK appeared repeatedly to be telling Labour it wanted "change".
Indian-origin ICC judge Navanethem Pillay has been named the United Nations' new human rights chief, despite some initial opposition from the US. Pillay, 67, who is from South Africa, will succeed Louise Arbour of Canada who completed her term on June 30. The job of human rights commissioner is both high profile and controversial as member States are very sensitive to their respective records. Arbour too had annoyed Islamic countries as also some western nations by her outspoken statements. The 192-member General Assembly is expected to confirm Pillay's appointment for a four-year term on Monday. The search for new human rights commissioner started when Arbour said she does not intend to seek a second term. Born into an ethnic Tamil family during apartheid daysm she was brought up in a poor neighbourhood and had to discrimination. Her father was a bus driver. Despite odds, she became the first woman to start law practice in South Africa's Natal Province in 1968 and defended several anti-apartheid activists and successfully fought for the right of political prisoners, including Nelson Mandela, to have access to lawyers. Officials and diplomats at the UN said the US had at one stage opposed her nomination because of her views on abortion and some other issues as also South Africa's opposition to impose sanction on Zimbabwe. But it finally gave the go ahead which led UN Secretary General Ban-Ki-moon to announce the appointment on Thursday.

A soldier with NATO's force in Afghanistan was killed and two wounded in a clash with insurgents in the troubled south of the country, the alliance's International Security Assistance Force said Friday. The ISAF casualties occurred on Thursday in the southern province of Helmand, it said in a statement. "One ISAF soldier was killed and two were wounded during an engagement with insurgents in Helmand province July 24," a statement said, giving no other details. ISAF does not release details of its casualties, including their nationalities.
The force comprises about 53,000 soldiers from 40 countries. Most of the soldiers in Helmand, one of the hotspots of a Taliban insurgency, are British. A British soldier was killed in Helmand on Tuesday. Nearly 140 foreign soldiers have lost their lives in Afghanistan this year, most of them in unrest.
Gregory L Schulte, US ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), expects the India-specific safeguards agreement to be approved by the agency's board of governors at the special meeting to be held in Vienna on August 1. Asked to intervene at a press conference addressed on Friday by Christopher Hill, US assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Schulte said it was a hypothetical question whether Pakistan would vote against India at the August 1 meeting or not. Asked if Pakistan's objection to the safeguards agreement with the IAEA will further delay the accord from becoming operational, Hill requested Schulte to take the question. Schulte said the agreement will benefit "everyone in the region, including India's neighbours". Hill is in Vienna to seek the cooperation of the IAEA in helping North Korea to denuclearise. "I am expecting that the board of governors will approve this agreement on August 1. It is a sound agreement based upon established safeguards principles. This is an agreement that has benefits for everyone in the region, including India's neighbours," said Schulte. "Basically India is committed to move into the non proliferation mainstream and the safeguards agreement will allow India to put 14 of its 22 nuclear facilities under safeguards. In future all of India's civil reactors will come under safeguards and this is a benefit to all," added Schulte, permanent representative of the US to the UN Office in Vienna including the IAEA.
A string of nine synchronised bomb blasts on Friday shook the IT hub during the busy lunch hour, leaving two killed and injuring 12 others-a chilling reminder of the over two-year old terror attack at the Indian Institute of Sciences in Bangalore. The crude bombs, concealed near refugee camps and roadside stuffed with nuts and bolts, exploded between 1.30 pm and 1.45 pm at Adugodi, Madivala, Nayandahalli, Mysore Road, Richmond Circle, Pantharapalya and Vittal Mallya Road. Two persons were killed and 12 injured in the blasts, Home Minister Shivraj Patil said in New Delhi. A woman waiting at a bus stop in Madivala on the Bangalore-Hosur Road was killed in the blast, while her husband and another person were seriously injured. Four of the blasts were between Hosur Road and Madiwala; the other three at Nayandahalli, Vittal Mallya Road and Richmond Circle, City Police Commissioner Shankar Bidari told reporters.
Except in two places, low intensity explosives were used for the blasts, which occurred within a few minutes of each other, he said. Police have recovered gelatin sticks, mainly used in quarry operations, from one of the blast sites. No group claimed immediate responsibility for the blasts. However, sources in the Union Home Ministry said that the hand of local cadre of banned SIMI was suspected to be behind the blasts and the expertise in assembling the low intensity devices possibly being provided by Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Taiba. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh strongly condemned the serial blasts and asked the people to remain calm and maintain communal harmony. He announced Rs.One lakh ex-gratia to the next of kin of each of the deceased.

A Palestinian rammed a bulldozer into vehicles on a busy Jerusalem street on Tuesday, ahead of a visit by US Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, and wounded 16 people before being shot dead. The attack, just down the road from the hotel where Obama was to stay, was the second such incident in Jewish west Jerusalem in three weeks. It occurred while Israeli President Shimon Peres hosted Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at his official residence less than a kilometre away. Israeli officials said the driver was a Palestinian from a village in an area of the occupied West Bank that Israel considers part of Jerusalem. Its residents have freedom of movement throughout the city and Israel. “The bulldozer driver left a construction site, and hit two cars,” a police spokesman said. “A civilian who saw what was happening, shot him. The bulldozer continued on its way. A border police patrol... continued to shoot and the terrorist was killed.” The bulldozer also hit a bus. Emergency services said at least 16 people were wounded, one seriously. After the attack, police set up a cordon around the yellow bulldozer and the slumped body of the driver inside. “This was another attempt to murder innocent people in a senseless act of terrorism,” said Mark Regev, a spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh won the confidence of Lok Sabha, and its approval of the nuclear deal on Tuesday. He also got back at his critics in a language and manner he hasn’t used in 17 years of his political life. The vote went like this: UPA and it allies got 275 and the opposition 256. It was a hard fought victory, won with the help of 10 abstentions and some cross voting from the opposition camp. "India is prepared to take its rightful place in the comity of nations," Singh said outside Parliament, as a bank of cameras went off at the same time. The government will now press ahead with the nuclear agreement and its unfinished reforms agenda. "This government has an absolute majority and this is a confidence to go forward," Finance Minister P Chidambaram said.
The PM is also expected to reshuffle his cabinet to include people who can deliver on the UPA agenda. Some vacancies will also be filled, paving the way for the return of JMM leader Shibu Soren.
UPA government’s erstwhile Left front allies had not only opposed the nuclear deal but also its attempts to reform insurance, banking and pension funds. "They wanted me behave like their bonded slave," Singh said in a speech he was unable to deliver in the House. But he tabled it.
The speech shows a rare side to the mild-mannered prime minister. "To fulfill his ambitions," he said about Leader of Opposition LK Advani, “he has made at least three attempts to topple our government." "But on each occasion his astrologers have misled him." The PM then went on to advice Advani to "change his astrologers for his sake and India’s sake". Advani had been extremely critical of the prime minister in his speech on Monday. It was Singh’s turn on Tuesday: "before leveling charges of incompetence on others, Shri Advani should do some introspection."
But all that warmth and affection evaporates into the humid seaside air when teams cross the boundary line and enter the field of play. Since August 2004, in 16 matches at home, Sri Lanka have lost just one Test, to Pakistan, at Kandy. India, for all their strengths, are not going to find the going easy. “There is a lot of pride involved. We don’t want anyone else to come and beat us at home. That’s the attitude we go with,” Mahela Jayawardene said on the eve of the first Test.
“The fans are here to support us and if this is our home ground, we would like to protect that (home record). That’s why we are very consistent at home and we will continue to do that because, as I said, there is a lot of pride involved in it.”
But it’s not merely a question of pride. It’s also a mastery of the conditions. Pitches have been slow and low, offering turn, but it takes a bowler of the skill and experience of Muttiah Muralitharan to exploit the conditions. The two things you are guaranteed if you play cricket in Sri Lanka at this time of the year are runs and rain interruptions. Whatever else you do, whatever weapons you have in reserve, you had better make sure you make big scores, for coming back from a deficit can be a monumental exercise.
That Ajantha Mendis and his quiver full of differing arrows have dominated conversation when there are two other bowlers in the team who have 1,048 Test scalps between them was not a point that went past the Indian skipper. Never given to flights of fancy and seldom surprised or excited by something, Kumble put things in perspective when asked about Mendis. “It’s his first Test match. Let’s not forget that. As a youngster when you play your first Test match you’re obviously nervous. That factor is there and if you look at our batting strength, most of them have played over 100 Test matches,” said Kumble, just before the team jogged out to the outfield at the Sinhalese Sports Club for practice in the sweltering noon heat, said: “We respect every bowler. The two bowlers who have done well over the years are Murali and Vaas and you can’t discount that. It’s a matter of handling the bowlers you face and taking the opportunities that come your way as a batting unit.”
There’s no doubt that Mendis has caught the imagination of the public, and if he plays — which he seems all set to unless Wednesday dawns dramatically overcast — the attention coming his way will actually help both teams slip gently into Test-match mode. After the wild hype of the Indian Premier League, two teams dressed in white, referred to simply by their country names, will play a game whose original format has scarcely been tinkered with. The player referral system is a change but it’s not a departure from how bat and ball challenge each other for supremacy. The Mendis mania has meant that hardly anyone is talking about Sachin Tendulkar (who averages a better-than-Bradman 111.66 in Sri Lanka) being 172 runs short of becoming the highest run-getter in Tests. It has meant that attention has been drawn away from Sri Lanka’s search for a fast bowler to partner the untiring Vaas, and India’s quest for continued overseas success. And there’s the small matter of the world-record 624-run stand that Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara put together at this very ground. When the build up is deliciously low key, barring the one sensation, you know it’s time for Tests. And no matter how many millions might be involved in any other form, it’s still the best cricket.

Google is clearly the best general-purpose search engine on the Web (see www.pcmag.com/searchengines But most people don't use it to its best advantage. Do you just plug in a keyword or two and hope for the best? That may be the quickest way to search, but with more than 3 billion pages in Google's index, it's still a struggle to pare results to a
manageable number. But Google is an remarkably powerful tool that can ease and enhance your Internet exploration. Google's search options go beyond simple keywords, the Web, and even its own programmers. Let's look at some of Google's lesser-known options. Syntax Search Tricks
Using a special syntax is a way to tell Google that you want to restrict your searches to certain elements or characteristics of Web pages. Google has a fairly complete list of its syntax elements at www.google.com/help/operators.html. Here are some advanced operators that can help narrow down your search results. Intitle: at the beginning of a query word or phrase (intitle:"Three Blind Mice") restricts your search results to just the titles of
Web pages. Intext: does the opposite of intitle:, searching only the body text, ignoring titles, links, and so forth. Intext: is perfect when what you're searching for might commonly appear in URLs. If you're looking for the term HTML, for example, and you don't want to
get results such as www.mysite.com/index.html, you can enter intext:html.
Link: lets you see which pages are linking to your Web page or to another page you're interested in. For example, try typing in link:http://www.pcmag.com Try using site: (which restricts results to top-level domains) with intitle: to find certain types of pages. For example, get
scholarly pages about Mark Twain by searching for intitle:"Mark Twain"site:edu. Experiment with mixing various elements; you'll develop several strategies for finding the stuff you want more effectively. The site: command is very helpful as an alternative to the mediocre search engines built into many sites. Swiss Army Google Google has a number of services that can help you accomplish tasks you may never have thought to use Google for. For example, the new calculator feature (www.google.com/help/features.html#calculator) lets you do both math and a variety of conversions from the search box. For extra fun, try the query "Answer to life the universe and everything." Let Google help you figure out whether you've got the right spelling—and the right word—for your search. Enter a misspelled word or phrase into the query box (try "thre blund mise") and Google may suggest a proper spelling. This doesn't always succeed; it works best when the word you're searching for can be found in a dictionary. Once you search for a properly spelled word, look at the results page, which repeats your query. (If you're searching for "three blind mice," underneath the search window will appear a statement such as Searched the web for "three blind mice.") You'll discover that you can click on each word in your search phrase and get a definition from a dictionary.
Suppose you want to contact someone and don't have his phone number handy. Google can help you with that, too. Just enter a name, city, and state. (The city is optional, but you must enter a state.) If a phone number matches the listing, you'll see it at the top of the search results along with a map link to the address. If you'd rather restrict your results, use rphonebook: for
residential listings or bphonebook: for business listings. If you'd rather use a search form for business phone listings, try Yellow Search
(www.buzztoolbox.com/google/yellowsearch.shtml).
Extended Googling
Google offers several services that give you a head start in focusing your search. Google Groups
(http://groups.google.com) indexes literally millions of messages from decades of discussion on Usenet. Google even helps you with your shopping via two tools: FroogleCODE(http://froogle.google.com), which indexes products from online stores, and Google CatalogsCODE(http://catalogs.google.com),which features products from more 6,000 paper catalogs in a searchable index. And this only scratches the surface. You can get a complete list of Google's tools and services at www.google.com/options/index.html You're probably used to using Google in your browser. But have you ever thought of using Google outside your browser?
Google Alert
(www.googlealert.com)
monitors your search terms and e-mails you information about new additions to Google's Web index. (Google Alert is not affiliated with Google; it uses Google's Web services API to perform its searches.) If you're more interested in news stories than general Web content, check out the beta version of Google News Alerts (www.google.com/newsalerts).
This service (which is affiliated with Google) will monitor up to 50 news queries per e-mail address and send you information about news stories that match your query. (Hint: Use the intitle: and source: syntax elements with Google News to limit the number of alerts you get.)
Google on the telephone? Yup. This service is brought to you by the folks at Google Labs
(http://labs.google.com), a place for experimental Google ideas and features (which may come and go, so what's there at this writing might not be there when you decide to check it out). With Google Voice Search (http://labs1.google.com/gvs.html), you dial the Voice Search phone number, speak your keywords, and then click on the indicated link. Every time you say a
new search term, the results page will refresh with your new query (you must have JavaScript enabled for this to work). Remember, this service is still in an experimental phase, so don't expect 100 percent success. In 2002, Google released the Google API (application programming interface), a way for programmers to access Google's search engine results without violating the Google Terms of Service. A lot of people have created useful (and occasionally not-so-useful but interesting) applications not available from Google itself, such as Google Alert. For many applications, you'll need an API key, which is available free fromCODEwww.google.com/apis
. See the figures for two more examples, and visit www.pcmag.com/solutions
for more. Thanks to its many different search properties, Google goes far beyond a regular search engine. Give the tricks in this article a try. You'll be amazed at how many different ways Google can improve your Internet searching.
Online Extra : More Google Tips
Here are a few more clever ways to tweak your Google searches.
Search Within a Timeframe Daterange: (start date–end date). You can restrict your searches to pages that were indexed within a certain time period.
Daterange: searches by when Google indexed a page, not when the page itself was created. This operator can help you ensure that results will have fresh content (by using recent dates), or you can use it to avoid a topic's current-news blizzard and concentrate only on older results. Daterange: is actually more useful if you go elsewhere to take advantage of it, because
daterange: requires Julian dates, not standard Gregorian dates. You can find converters on the Web (such as CODEhttp://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/JulianDate.html
excl.gif No Active Links, Read the Rules - Edit by Ninja excl.gif ), but an easier way is to do a Google daterange: search by filling in a form at www.researchbuzz.com/toolbox/goofresh.shtml or www.faganfinder.com/engines/google.shtml . If one special syntax element is good, two must be better, right? Sometimes. Though some operators can't be mixed (you can't use the link: operator with anything else) many can be, quickly narrowing your results to a less overwhelming number.
More Google API Applications
Staggernation.com offers three tools based on the Google API. The Google API Web Search by Host (GAWSH) lists the Web hosts of the results for a given query
(www.staggernation.com/gawsh/). When you click on the triangle next to each host, you get a list of results for that host. The Google API Relation Browsing Outliner (GARBO) is a little more complicated: You enter a URL and choose whether you want pages that related to the URL
or linked to the URL (www.staggernation.com/garbo/). Click on the triangle next to an URL to get a list of pages linked or related to that particular URL. CapeMail is an e-mail search
application that allows you to send an e-mail to google@capeclear.com with the text of your query in the subject line and get the first ten results for that query back. Maybe it's not something you'd do every day, but if your cell phone does e-mail and doesn't do Web browsing, this is a very handy address to know.
Do you want to make money blogging? If you do - you’re not alone. More and more bloggers are finding that blogging is a profitable medium. Whether it be to earn a few extra dollars a week to feed their coffee habit, or making enough money to stop them having to get a part time job to get through college, or whether they’ve got it to a point where they are able to make a full
time living from their blogging - there are tens of thousands of bloggers making money from blogging. In this page I want to share some information for beginners on making money from their blogs. I will start by sharing my own top Money Making Methods (updated regularly) but below that point you to some great resources and teaching on how to increase your income from blogging. What follows is a quick summary of my main income streams from blogging. Before you read it though - keep in mind that every blog is unique in how it can make money. Some of the following income streams will work on some blogs a lot better than others - the key is to experiment with as many as possible and see what works best for you. The following income streams (from a number of blogs) have helped me to earn a six figure income each year for the last three years from blogging. I’ve ranked them from highest to lowest. I hope you find it useful to see the mix and variety of ways that I earn a living from blogging. 1. AdSense Despite not using it here at ProBlogger any more (here’s why) I continue to use AdSense with amazing effect on my other blogs. I have them all set to show image and text based ads and find that 250×300 pixel ads work best (usually with a blended design). I don’t have much luck with their ‘referrals’ program but their normal ads work a treat and continue to be the biggest earner for me. 2. Chitika Chitka continues to be a great performer for me on my blogs. They work best on product related blogs although their recent announcement of their Premium ad unit is exciting as they now offer ads with a non product focus that I’m hearing great conversions on (I have one reader who is getting $28 CPM on this ad unit).Chitika offers a range of ad units that I experiment
with. I find their eMiniMalls work best and that Related Product Units are also good. Their Shoplincs product isn’t performing as well as it once did for me - mainly because I’ve been promoting it less and have driven less traffic to it. Over the time I’ve been using Chitika they’ve now earned me over a quarter of a million dollars - I can’t recommend them enough! 3. Private Ad Sales/Sponsorships Private ad sales directly to advertisers have continued to grow over the last few months and as a result they’re now my third highest income stream. I expect them to overtake both Chitika and AdSense in the coming months. This includes ad sales of the 125 x 125 ads here at ProBlogger as well as a campaign or two at Digital Photography School. 4. Amazon Associates Amazon’s affiliate program has been one of my big movers in the last 12 months. I used to make a few odd dollars from it - however in recent times it has become a significant earner for me (as I’ve shared previously). This quarter it grew even more than previously as a result of continued growth of DPS where I recommend books, software and cameras. 5. Miscellaneous Affiliate Programs I run a variety of affiliate programs on my blogs - most of which bring in smaller amounts of money that don’t really justify a category of their own. These include - - Digital Photography Secrets (a camera technique series), Pro Photo Secrets (a great
photoshop product) , Yaro’s Blog Mastermind Mentoring Program (about to open the doors again), SEO Book (Aaron’s legendary resource) and the excellent Teaching Sells course (which just continues to grow in what it offers to it’s members in terms of content). The great thing about many of these programs is that they are of such high quality that they sell themselves and I am being emailed from readers who sign up to them thanking me for the recommendation! 6. Shopzilla As I wrote recently - Shopzilla has really impressed me with how it’s performed over the last few weeks. It’s actually doing well enough to debut in this list at #6. The ads are similar to Chitika but the click values have been higher for me to this point. They don’t offer quite as many options as Chitika does in terms of types of ads but for a new ad network there’s definitely promising signs. I’m looking forward to seeing how they continue to develop! 7. ProBlogger Job Boards The job boards here at ProBlogger continue to grow each month in the number of advertisements that are being bought. This enabled me to invest most of the money that they’d earned a while back into getting a new back end for the boards and to redesign them. It hit me today that the boards are now bringing in around $1000 a month in revenue which is pretty nice considering that they are so low maintenance to run. They also offer a service to readers and add value to the overall blog. The only problem that I face with the job boards is that there are so many bloggers looking for work that the demand for jobs far exceeds the supply. On the good side of things is that advertisers are reporting getting amazing quality of applications. 8. WidgetBucks Another newcomer to this list is WidgetBucks - another ad network that ProBlogger readers will be familiar with. WidgetBucks is similar to Chitika and Shopzilla in many respects and works well on product related sites. It does best on sites with US traffic (the reason I’ve not used it as much as I get a lot of international traffic) so if you have a product related
site with a US audience it’d be a no brainer to try out WidgetBucks. I’m hoping they’ll continue to expand their offerings in terms of ad types and visitor location. Disclaimer - WidgetBucks are an advertiser on ProBlogger 9. Miscellaneous Advertising Programs I also play with a number of other ad networks. Some I run as tests to see if I should review them here - and some are just
advertising that run in the background on some of my smaller blogs. These include ShoppingAds, Feedburner RSS ads, Vizu (a poll advertising system), Kontera and Bidvertiser. Together these don’t add up to major earnings for me - not because they are not good, but because I don’t use them heavily (a blog can only run so many ads on it). I think that that covers most of it although it’s worth mentioning that last time I did this list I also included TextLinkAds which
used to be every bloggers favorite way to make money blogging by selling text links. I’ve stopped using them due to Google cracking down on them (read more about this here) but it’s worth noting that many bloggers still use them successfully - I advise to proceed with caution. Disclaimer - TLA are an advertiser on ProBlogger Useful Resources for Bloggers Wanting to Make Money Blogging A lot has been written on the topic of making money online from blogs. CREDIT cards are a lot like nagging wives — you can’t live with them, you can’t live without them. From temporary borrowing, transfer of existing debt, facilitating regular purchase, social status and bill payments etc, credit cards seem to be a one-stop solution. The wife of course is a one-stop solution for everything in life. But the downside is pretty steep too. High interest, threatening agents, bad credit history etc can follow a credit card And since you plan to enter a long term relationship with both — it’s best you choose carefully. But these days it may be a better idea to spend more time choosing your credit card than your wife because while your wife will forgive you if you forget her birthday, you credit card will not be as forgiving if you forget due day.So let’s see what you need to keep in mind while choosing your credit card: 1. Joining and annual fees Many credit cards are being offered free for life except a few high-end credit cards. Hence you should ideally go for a card, which has no annual or joining fees. Make sure it’s a lifetime offer and not just for the first year.2. Balance transfer facility Many consumers look at credit cards as a short-term debt facility. When a consumer is not able to manage the debt with one credit card, he wishes to transfer the debt on the other card. Balance transfer feature could be very useful in such a case.3. Interest rates Beware of this one. When credit card dues are not paid within the given period, banks charge interest on the amount due. If you are taking a credit card to avail a short-term loan, interest rate has to be taken very seriously. Generally these rates vary from 1.33% to 3.15% per month depending on the card type and other features.4. Credit period Usually, all banks that provide credit cards extend a free credit period of 21-52 days. This depends upon the type of card and the date of transaction. More the interest free credit period, the more time you have to pay off the due without having to pay the interest.5. Credit limit This the is the maximum amount you can spend at a time, using your credit card. This depends on your income, which the bank refers to when issuing you the card. The general outlook is — higher the credit-limit the better! This is not advisable unless you intend to use the credit card limit.6. Customer service Few years back, customer service was not a greatly developed concept in banking as well as credit cards. Now customer service is a factor to be taken very seriously when going for a credit card. It’s better to go for a credit card offered by a bank with which you already have an existing good relationship.7. Reward points and cash-back All banks are trying to attract customer through schemes like reward points. Especially
people who intend to use the credit card fairly regularly should look for good reward point schemes.8. Shopping perks A good credit card is acceptable with most merchants in the town and across the country. Having tie-ups with multiple outlets, which offer great discounts, and shopping schemes are an added advantage. This also includes the waiver of surcharge at petrol pumps and utility bill payments. That’s a long list isn’t it? The smart way to select a credit card is outlining the needs first. Don’t go for features that you will never use. Thankfully the path to selecting the right wife is a whole lot simpler, especially in our country
